An Irishman and a Scotsman

My first session at the ECA was wonderful!  I must say it does feel good to be back in a University environment. The Art School is literally brimming with creativity and inspiration, it is a hive of activity.
Our tutor is a lovely lady who seems passionate about all subjects- perfect for such a diverse group of people with different targets and interests. There are 8 in my class, and all from very different environments; there is a food photographer, a fashionista, a PHD student wishing to document her studies photographically, a hairdresser wishing to further her skills so she can take professional shots of the models she uses and three hobbyists. I have a huge amount of work to do for next week, I came away from our first session armed with copious notes of books to read, photographers to look up and tasks to perform.  I expect I shall be devoting more time to this course than I did to my degree! The first practical task was to take some shots using aperture priority mode on the camera.
Our tutor wants us to be very familiar with all the settings for  next  week  so that we can press on with our projects and portfolios as soon as is humanly possible. The end assesment will be based on an exhibition of up to 20 photographs and a workbook. In the future I wish for documentary photography and portraiture to be  the  subjects  I  specialise  in, so I  chose  to  use  my  father ( the Irishman ) as my first subject. He has a wonderfully expressive face filed with laughter lines that light up his face when he smiles. I sometimes imagine that the lines were probably there when he was born.

The photographs you see are completely unedited. Photoshop arrives next weekend courtesy of a friend I am doing some work for so I am looking forward to that! He is in the graphics and printing industry and I am taking some photographs of installations around Edinburgh for his new website. When it goes live I will write a post.
